Underwater HOA

Beginning December 2nd, select areas in Pinecrest will become life-size art installations. As part of a public art project titled "Underwater HOA" by acclaimed environmental artist Xavier Cortada, Pinecrest’s 2.5 mile-stretch Killian Drive will become an exhibit called “Elevation Drive.” Cars will be able to literally drive-by and watch sea level rise take place right before their eyes, in art form.

“Underwater Markers” street art displays at 57th, 62nd, 67th, and 72nd Avenues each feature one of Cortada’s Antarctic Ice Paintings as a backdrop and a number representing the intersection’s elevation number of feet above sea level. The art on the intersections will be augmented by the placement of 12” X 24” inch Underwater Markers, designed by the artist, in the public right-of-way along the road.

“Underwater HOA” is a participatory art project by Pinecrest artist-in-residence, Cortada, who is raising awareness on the issue of sea level rise across Miami-Dade County. The project also includes an exhibition of the artist’s Antarctic Ice Paintings at Pinecrest Gardens’ Hibiscus Gallery. Cortada traveled to Antarctica in 2006 as a National Science Foundation (NSF) Antarctic Artist and Writers Program fellow and created a series of works on paper by melting ice samples provided by scientists conducting research on the melting of Antarctic glaciers.

Additionally, in collaboration with the League of Conservation Voters’ Education Fund and environmental group, Rock the Earth, the artist and LCV volunteers will canvas the neighborhoods of Pinecrest, Miami Beach and Wynwood to hand out 6,000 “Underwater Markers” for residents to voluntarily place in their front yards during Art Basel in order to make sea level rise visible to all.

The Miami artist has also created a newly chartered Underwater HOA, the first meeting of the association will take place January 9, 2019 from 7 - 10:00 p.m. at Xavier Cortada’s studio in Pinecrest Gardens.

Lina Condes, a Ukrainian Contemporary, millennial artist, incorporates principles of bionic architecture and design into her work.

She will be exhibiting in the Art Miami Pavilion, at The Fountainbleu Hotel, and in the Miami Design District during Art Basel Week.

Her representation of an unblemished human is prominent in her series of stick figure sculptures which have no attachment to color, creed, gender, religion, language or sexual orientation. Her art is a representation of the purity and “bare bones” of what qualifies as human and Condes believes that there is a raw, unharvested energy found throughout the universe which represents such a purity.

Lina will be showing her work in Miami during Art Basel week at the fairs as well as in the Miami Design District. You can see her work in the Art Miami Pavilion Avant Gallery Booth AM335.

RnBae Collective Presents: Bae Basel

Every year, we're bombarded with flashy parties, branded activations and your favorite celebrities walking the streets of Wynwood, but we forget the true meaning of Art Basel. It's about the art right?

Straying away from our regular programing of showcases, we've decided to team up with our friends from LunchBox INTL to produce an art gallery that not only shows art in it's finest light, but ties in the branding of RnBae Collective. We've gathered a handful of our favorite Miami based photographers for a gallery showcasing R&B in a concert setting. Along with the gallery, we will walk guests through the history of R&B with a video presentation along with a performance to end the night. Of course, the night isn't complete without an interactive art installation and a photobooth for memory's sake. Guests can enjoy cocktails from our friends from Red Bull and Deep Eddy's Vodka.

Details: December 6th | 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. | 50 NE 62nd Street, Miami FL
